Mga Awit 23

Psalm 23:1

(A) Hindi niya sinabi sa talatang ito na "the Lord is the shepherd of all mankind" or "the shepherd of the world". But he said "my" dahil para kay David totoo at personal na ang Dios ang kaniyang pastor.

(B) Ang salitang 'my' or 'akin' ay nagpapakita at pagpapahayag ni David ng kaniyang 'ownership' sa Dios. Anong ibig sabihin? For king David there is no other shepherd will own him but God.

We all know that king David's former work or assignment was a shepherd for the flock of his father. In that way, he has the idea of how and what a good shepherd works for his sheep.

NOTE: king David was a good shepherd he killed a bear to protect the flock. 1 Samuel 17:34-37. King David took good care of the flock. He protects, loved, and cared for the flock.

FOR KING DAVID THE LORD IS HIS SHEPHERD BECAUSE?:

1. King David knew the Lord protects him from all of his enemies that wants to attack him. Like king Saul (1 Samuel 18:17-21), Absalom his son (2 Samuel 15-19), and Goliath the giant (1 Samuel 16-31)

2. King David knew God will take care of him. In terms of all David needs to be a good king of Israel.

3. King David knew that the Lord 'ONLY' would love him no matter what. King David knew that he was not a lovable person, he knew that Israel wouldn't accept him as a king and or maybe can be rejected by Israel.

This is very clear to king David, he never doubts this, he never refuses this truth to his mind and hears

The truth is that the Lord is his Shepherd, therefore king David knew this is the end of all dissatisfied needs. Being the Lord is his shepherd is both declaration and decision.

WHAT THIS MEANS?

(A) All the needs of king David are supplied by the Lord.

(B) King David decided to NOT desire more than what the Lord gives.

HOW THE GOOD SHEPHERD SUSTAINS?

II.

As the Lord as a good Shepherd He knew how to make King David rest when he needed it. Like the literal shepherd, he knew where the flock will have a good rest. He will lead the flock to a place where they can have a good rest.

(B) Kaniyang pinahihiga ako sa sariwang pastulan...

A good Shepherd didn't bring his flock elsewhere but to a green pasture. This is a place where the flock will have a good rest. And He faithfully brings or leads them in a green pasture. According to Philip Keller, sheep will not have a good rest or will not lie down easily if there were afraid, there was friction, flies, and famine.

The flock need still water and the shepherd knew about it. The still waters for the flock a comfort, care, and rest.

A GOOD SHEPHERD LEADS

III.

(A) Kaniyang pinapananauli ang aking kaluluwa...

In figuratively speaking, king David was restored by a green pasture, and still pasture.

The word "restoreth" means to deliver, render, recover, recompense, and requite. This is the idea of the rescue of a lost one. Like a straying sheep brought back.

In Hebrew, the word 'restoreth my soul' can mean bring me to repentance or conversion. (Boice)

Therefore, a man who sinned before the Lord has the power to restore him. Meaning The Lord brings the man that sinned in its original purity. Like what He did to king David when he said he was restored by the Lord.

(B) Pinapatnubayan niya ako...

The Lord guides the sheep (Christians) in a time when we don't know what to do and where to go. He will lead us in the way where we need the most. LIKE WHAT HE DID TO KING DAVID.

(C) Sa mga landas ng katuwiran...

The Lord did not only restore and guide the sheep (Christians) He also lead us to righteousness. He gently leads us to righteousness, He never pushes us to our limits that we can't do yet. But He gently waits and leads us to the process He wants us to walk and live in.

(D) Alangalang sa kaniyang pangalan

When we walk and live in righteousness God leads us, we do those in the credit not on our own name, but the name of our Shepherd, the Lord.

SHEPERD'S BLESSING TO HIS SHEEP

IV.

This verse is a fact that Christians or should I say new convert Christians must know that not because we are in the presence of the Lord we cannot experience hardships, problems, and even deadly situations.

We are also subject to experiencing bad circumstances in life.

SHADOW OF DEATH MEANS BEING SURROUNDED BY BAD CIRCUMSTANCES.

But we should be happy because like king David declared in English "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death"  We should declare that also! Why?

(A) Because the Lord leads us as He is our Shepherd, death is just a shadow in us.  NO POWER BECAUSE JESUS TOOK THE FULL REALITY OF DEATH IN OUR PLACE.

(B) Because we know that the Lord shepherds us through the shadow of death.

(B) Even king David walks in the shadow of death he "WILL FEAR NO EVIL"

Why? because the presence of the Lord is enough to vanish all fear. In the presence of the Lord King David knew the Lord is with him.

This was gently used to lead the sheep and it also used to protect the sheep from predators.

But, the overall use of the rod and staff mentioned in this verse was to discipline the sheep. Let us imagine that the instruments used by the shepherd literally for sheep is also used by the Lord in us spiritually to discipline. The rod and staff were the word of God that lead us in all his righteousness that restores us.

These instruments were a comfort to David even in the shadow of death because he knows that the Lord leads, helps, and guides him even through correction. It is a pleasure for David to be corrected by God when he needed it.

THE SHEPHERD AS A HOST

(A) How overwhelming is the fact that the Lord will be the Host?

He sets a table for King David. What gesture of goodness is this?

When we receive the corrections of the Lord even if we are in bad circumstances, the Lord prepared a table in us which means a VICTORY in us in the presence of our enemies.

(B) THE ANOINTING

The Hebrew word anointest means to anoint, satisfy, and remove ashes. What thus it means?

1. The Lord anoint us. The anointing was given to those who are victorious.

2. The Lord satisfies us. He will satisfy us spiritually speaking. Our spiritual cup will be filled with the things that we needed the most.

3. The Lord removes ashes from our heads. In Bible times, removing ashes is the end of your distress, sadness, and mourning. The Lord will remove the ashes and He will replace joy, peace, and comforts.

(C) WITH OIL

The Hebrew word OIL means a liquid that comes from olive, perfume, and figuratively richness. This was used in Bible times to anoint someone. And it is also a display of the richness of a jew.

Thus, the oil also represents as Holy Spirit. The Lord will give us the richness of Gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit in the presence of our enemies.

(D) MY CUP RUNNETH OVER

Spiritually speaking we have a cup that should always be filled or full. As we are in the presence of the Lord our cup will be filled, and we will experience satisfaction in our souls.
